With the completion of our EmpowHer III Series last week, we covered some highly significant topics. Many thanks to our guest speaker, Robert Baker who delivered a compelling presentation on the importance of engaging men in the gender equality movement.

Robert highlighted the drawbacks of initiatives like Allyship programs, noting that they often lack sufficient engagement and focus primarily on women’s emotional states, rather than fostering collaboration between men and women

He also addressed points, that women might not consider when advocating for gender balance. One notable insight was that men might feel intimidated by the language used to describe organizations working for equality, such as “Women in X” and “Professional Women’s Network.” He emphasized the importance of using inclusive terminology on social media to encourage men to engage in gender balance conversations

Other areas discussed included:

  • Joint Presentation of Issues: Men and women presenting gender balance issues together is more powerful than women working alone.
  • Inclusive Invitations: Inviting men to events can make them feel welcome and provide easier access to discussions on gender balance.
  • Linking Equality to Business Development: Connecting discussions of equality to business and career development can help engage men.
  • Addressing Inequalities: Highlighting inequalities as they happen is crucial.

Many organizations are losing potential clients and contracts due to an imbalance between men and women within their teams. The imbalance remains significant, with men making up 80% of global leaders and 60% of line managers.
