Interview: Neema Michael Shayo - Leading With Purpose
Neema Michael Shayo is a cross-border electricity markets expert at EirGrid Group and long-time Corporate Partner of PWN Dublin. Neema has served as an energy advisor to the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, providing strategic insights on energy access and development policy in Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, Neema has contributed her technical expertise to the Renewable Fuels Taskforce under the Association of International Energy Negotiators, furthering dialogue and innovation around clean energy transitions. Her professional journey reflects a deep commitment to shaping equitable and sustainable energy systems, building cross-sectoral partnerships, and amplifying the women voices in the energy sector.
Neema was a mentee in 2025 and a panellist contributor at the recent PWN Dublin Mentoring 2025 closing event.
Neema, maybe we can start with learning a little bit more about you. You have an MSc in International Studies and Energy Finance, what inspired you to pursue this area of study?
Understanding the complexity of financing the energy sector to meet decarbonization targets, I chose to pursue an MSc as a strategic move to bridge the gap between policy design and financial decision-making, in the energy sector. As a recipient of the prestigious Chevening Scholarship, studying in the UK gave me exposure to global perspectives and equipped me with the technical skills needed to contribute to shaping the energy industry trajectory.
What is your experience of female students and graduates entering STEM disciplines?
Studies indicate that the number of women globally, in STEM, has increased by 30%. Despite gains in higher education, women continue to drop out at key career stages, leading to poor representation in leadership roles. Lack of supportive policies remains a major obstacle, underscoring the need for intervention, mentorship, and systemic reform to achieve meaningful parity in STEM.
On the subject of mentoring, I understand you were a mentee and panellist at the 2025 Mentoring closing event this year - what inspired you to put apply?
I was introduced to PWN Dublin by a colleague. I was inspired by the fact that PWN is very diverse, with members from different backgrounds. Hence, the conversations are always very refreshing when we meet.
Was this your first time participating in a PWN Mentoring programme?
Yes - The PWN Dublin mentoring journey allowed me to strategically focus on becoming a successful leader, not only in the workplace but also in life in general. What I enjoyed most was the opportunity to transform myself as an individual - things like: growth mindset; understanding how to manage stress; emotional intelligence; and, reflecting on personal values.
Tell us a little bit about your Mentor, what attracted you to their particular topic?
Christabelle was a perfect match for me! I chose her topic "Leading with Purpose" mainly because I wanted to redefine my leadership journey and articulate my value proposition. Given Christabelle's vast experience in leadership, combined with her interest in Diversity, Equality, and Inclusion (DEI), I felt she understood my needs. She was able to pinpoint areas for improvement and provide support.
What were your key takeaways from mentoring experience?
There are quite a lot of takeaways from this mentorship programme, however, I would say my three key learnings were:
- effective leadership communication styles
- authenticity in personal branding as well as intentional networking, and
- relationship building.
Would you sign up for another PWN Mentoring programme in the future?
Absolutely, I will consider this programme and highly recommend it to others. Christabelle offered a hybrid model of delivery, which made it convenient for all participants.
What advice you would give to your 18-year-old self?
Invest in your network intentionally. If you can, grow together with your friends, because it becomes harder to find them as time goes by.
Neema, thank you for your time. It’ been a real pleasure getting to know you a little better and hearing about your experiences.
